With summer upon us, and event season in full swing, it can be difficult to choose just one event to spotlight, but in the end our staff unanimously agreed the Lake Calaveras event in San Antonio, TX is truly something special. Event coordinator, Jim Behnken, has been working with C.A.S.T. for 17 years and has spent the last 10 as lead for the Lake Calaveras Event. When asked what keeps him coming back each year, Behnken credits the enthusiasm of both participants and volunteers, many of whom having been assisting from the event’s beginning. “It’s the happy screams and smiles of joy that arrive as soon as the fishing starts”.
In addition to Behnken’s efforts, CPS Energy and Texas Parks and Wildlife have been event partners from the start providing support of numerous levels. Participants are recruited through local agencies affiliated with the United Way and include groups like Kinetic Kids. One special feature at Lake Calaveras is the ability to have participants fish in a cove stocked the previous day almost guaranteeing that everyone gets to experience not only fishing, but also get to really catch a special thrill!
